Paying Markets for Writers, welcomes new writers

“The guiding principle of Fiction has always been to go to terra incognita in the writing of the imagination, and to ask that modern fiction set itself serious questions, interrogating the nature of the real and the fantastic. It represents no particular school of fiction, except the innovative. Fiction has traditionally attempted to make accessible the inaccessible, to bring the experimental to a broader audience. As a result of its willingness to publish the difficult, experimental and unusual, Fiction has a unique reputation in the U.S. and abroad as a journal of future directions. We pride ourselves on publishing established writers along with new, emerging voices that have not yet been heard.” Pays on publication. Publishes ms 3-12 months after acceptance. Buys First N.A. Rights. No reprints. Guidelines online.

. “The subject matter of parABnormal Magazine is, yes, the paranormal. For us, this includes ghosts, spectres, haunts, various whisperers, and so forth. It also includes shapeshifters and creatures from various folklores. PLEASE NOTE: CREATURES LIKE VAMPIRES, GHOULS, WEREWOLVES, AND ZOMBIES ARE NOT PARANORMAL. Shapeshifters, for the purpose of this magazine, refer to the spiritual shift, not the physical. Think Native American shaman. Paranormal activity centers around the human, not the creature.” Quarterly. Pays on acceptance. Publishes ms within 30-90 days. Buys First N.A. Serial Rights and electronic rights for one year. “Established in 2017 as a literary magazine for fiction, CRAFT expanded in 2020 to publish creative nonfiction as well. We explore how writing works, reading pieces with a focus on the elements of craft, on the art of prose. We feature previously unpublished creative work, with occasional reprints, as well as critical pieces including craft essays and interviews. All published creative pieces include an author’s note and an editorial introduction that both discuss stylistics in the work. We do not charge fees for our fiction or creative nonfiction submissions, or for our craft categories, and we are a paying market. Our general submissions are open year-round with no capacity limits. We value accessibility—keeping CRAFT free to read and free to submit to is our priority. We work with all writers, established as well as emerging. All creative work published in CRAFT comes through submission; we do not solicit fiction or creative nonfiction. We offer editorial feedback on short prose, as well as free fast-response submissions for writers from historically marginalized groups.” Weekly. Pays on publication. Publishes within two months of acceptance. Buys First Serial Publication Rights for three months. Sometimes accepts reprints for contests. Responds in four to five months. Guidelines online.
