Good Old Boat magazine, 7340 Niagara Lane N, Osseo, MN 55311. Email: karen-at-goodoldboat.com. Website: http://www.goodoldboat.com. Karen Larson, Founding Editor. "Good Old Boat magazine focuses on maintaining, upgrading, and owning cruising sailboats built anytime since the late 1950s. Readers see themselves as part of a community of sailors who share similar maintenance and replacement concerns that are not generally addressed in other sailing publications. Our readers do much of the writing about projects they have done on their boats and the joy they receive from sailing them." 90% freelance. Welcomes new writers. Circ. 30K. Bi-monthly. Pays 60 days in advance of publication. Publishes ms 12-18 months after acceptance. Buys First North American rights. No reprints. Responds in 2-6 weeks. Sample free on request. Subscription $39.95 per year in the U.S. and Canada; $49.95 overseas. Guidelines online here.
CURRENT NEEDS: "Short articles about simple projects they've done on their boats." Pays $50-$700 for 300-5000 words. "Email and letters, query or completed ms...all are fine. I prefer not to receive phone calls."
PHOTOS/ART: "We pay $100 for covers. Most other photos are included as part of articles we purchase. We are happy with slides, prints, and electronic images. Please turn off the date stamp. It is difficult to remove that from your photograph. It may render a photograph useless, in fact. Never send a photo that has been printed on an inkjet printer. Send the electronic (digital) image instead. Electronic photo files must be high resolution -- at least 300 dpi -- to be usable for print reproduction. 4.2 to 6.2 megapixel cameras are up to the task with their high-resolution settings."
HINTS: "Short technical articles about projects done on your own sailboat are the best way to break in. Everyone wants to write Cruising Memories and Reflections articles. We receive way too many of those. Please keep in mind that you must be a sailor to write for us."

Italian America Magazine, 219 E Street NE, Washington, DC 20002. P(202)547-2900. F(202)547-1492. Email: ddesanctis-at-osia.org. Website: http://www.osia.org. Dona De Sanctis, Editor-in-Chief. We focus on the little known facts about Italian Americans and their contributions to the US past and present." 25% Freelance. Welcomes new writers. Circ. 65K. Quarterly. Pays on final edit. Publishes ms 3-18 months after acceptance. Buys non-exclusive rights. Accepts some reprints. Responds in 2-5 weeks. Sample copy available by email. Subscription $20, $25 outside the U.S. Guidelines available by email.
CURRENT NEEDS: "Always looking for well-documented, well-written, concise articles about little-known facts regarding Italian Americans living and dead. Also the story behind our customs and food. For example: Where did the tradition of the Seven Fishes for Christmas Eve dinner come from? How did Italians discover the tomato? Why don't Italians eat sweets at the end of a meal?, etc." Pays $250-$350 for 750-1000 words.
PHOTOS/ART: "Digitals at 300dpi. Full color preferred. Payment for photos are included in articles flat fee."
HINTS: "Best advice: Make it easy for me - Get to the point quickly about your story idea. Send along a digital and keep your query short. Follow up is fine but don't be a pest. Once or twice a month max and no phone calls please. The most common mistake is not looking at our guidelines or the magazine before querying me. I don't buy food or travel stories and I am not interest in a family memoir about grandma unless she was Maria Montessori or Geraldine Ferrara."
