book marketing

I was a bit skeptical of the idea of selling books at art fairs even though the idea was mine. But, I have been willing to step out of the box in order to sell my novel, Out of the Shadows. As it turned out having a little booth at art fairs has been profitable, and I sell more books than I have at book signings at Barnes and Nobles or independent bookstores.

Last week, I wrote about Richard needing “more than a few dollars” for a surprise for me. Well, he and the kids bought me 9 hours of kite surfing lessons for Mother’s Day! I am so excited!! It’s in Clearwater so we’re going to take a short vacation up there in the next few weeks. Richard and the boys can have fun on the beach while I’m taking my lessons (3 lessons at 3 hours each). We took a trip to a beach resort last summer with the kids and had a blast so I’m looking forward to doing that again.

As most of you know, yet another lawsuit has been filed against Author Solutions, which owns AuthorHouse, Xlibris, iUniverse, Trafford, Wordclay, and others. The lawyers are seeking class-action status, of course.
I have provided a break-down of the highlights from the lawsuit HERE.
Today, I’m gonna rant…

I have wanted to become an author for more than 20 years. This dream has always taken a backseat to everything in my life. I would like to know if you can offer me any advice on getting started.

Richard told me he needed some money for a surprise. It’s more than a few dollars so I’m pretty curious about what it is. And, since Mother’s Day is next weekend, I’m thinking I’m going to be seeing the surprise sooner rather than later! I’m excited!!

Now, I have nothing against erotica but I do know I wouldn’t want the most romantic moment of my life splashed on the cover of a book containing phrases like “out comes his stone pillar of a (part of the male anatomy)” and “my quivering flesh, open and available.” You get the picture, right?

Hi Angela – was reading your link from the last issue. I do agree with your advice that authors should not sign over any rights out of hand, but as a librarian who worked with a collection for print impaired students, it was difficult to obtain copyright permission for materials we transcribed into Braille, large print, or audio recordings. I have some sympathy with the gift contract from that perspective…

What are your thoughts on sending a book to large institutions that I plan to pitch to? For example, I am going to pitch to colleges to include my book as recommended reading for psychology/sociology programs.
