Played Hooky On Monday To Go Fishing!

Since I worked the entire weekend for the WritersWeekly Spring 2014 24-Hour Short Story Contest, we played hooky on Monday, and went fishing on Ali and Justin’s boat. Max, Mason, and Frank came along, too. (Richard was out of town for a memorial service.) The weather was warm, and very breezy, and it was absolutely perfect! Mason and I caught three fish together. Well, I hooked them and Mason reeled them in. Max also caught three, Ali caught two, Frank caught four Needlefish with his cast net (is that cheating?) and Justin, the captain, got skunked. It was such a beautiful day that he didn’t mind.

We stopped at a small key with a white sand beach and everybody got to swim, even Jax the dog. We then tried fishing in a pass but the tide was moving out so fast that we all got skunked at that location.

On the way back, Max got his first boat driving lesson and he was THRILLED!!! But, he was also VERY nervous about driving under the Manatee bridge because the pilings and barnacles are very menacing. Add passing boats into the mix and it can be a bit nerve-wracking. Justin, the captain, was very patient and encouraging as he talked Max through it, all the while standing right next to him in case there were any problems. Afterward, Max was so proud of himself! It made my heart soar to see him overcome his fear, and celebrate his feat. 🙂

I bought Ali and Justin a new map for their boat and it promptly blew into the bay (yes, it’s waterproof). Frank saved the day by jumping in to retrieve it.

The wind was so strong that we later also lost Ali’s cute straw hat with the leopard print bow. It was brand new so we untied the boat, and went to save that, too. Doesn’t Frank look dapper in Ali’s hat? Ha ha.

This Week’s Masonism:

“Mommy can you hold my pole? I only like fishing when there’s already a fish on the hook.”
