Many magazines and websites offer good earning opportunities to freelance writers. They usually accept investigative articles and long-form journalism.

On this list are magazines and websites that accept articles from freelance writers covering topics such as finance, technology, science, innovation, and travel. They pay up to $6,000 for articles!

Institutional Investor

This is an international business to business publication that focuses on international finance. They accept articles from freelance writers, and they are looking for “stories that feature conflict, narrative, access, and disclosure.” Institutional Investor is interested in “international content that will resonate with American readers; articles based on novel data or research about the asset management industry and cultural stories about the financial industry.” Articles range from 1,000 to 2,000 words. Trails Magazine 

Trails is the quarterly print magazine specifically for the backpacking, thru-hiking, and multi-day adventure crowd. The focus of Trails is on backpacking and outdoors: bikepacking, camping, and even things like rafting or mountaineering. They primarily focus on backcountry and wilderness. The magazine preferred North American destinations.

The magazine accepts features, short (typically between 300 and 600 words) articles, opinion, current events, profiles, and other quick-hit types of stories, Q&A, anecdotal story, profiles or reviews of backpacking meals, profiles of the food scene in trail towns, food-related essays or opinion, trip report, essays (500- to 1000-word), gear-related stories, like profiles of unique gear makers, explorations of unique gear categories, historical anecdotes and outdoor-related opinion.

The Atavist Magazine

This is a monthly publication of long-form narrative journalism. The magazine publishes one true story every month, and they accept ideas on a rolling basis. They are looking for stories between 8,000 and 30,000 words. No matter if it is historical or current, about crime or science, adventure, or first-person experience, the magazine wants stories with a strong narrative approach.

SleepFoundation.org

This publication is the leading source for evidence-based, medically reviewed sleep health information.  They are looking for sleep-related article pitches from writers. Wired is a publication about technology, science, and innovation.  They accept long-form features and essays for the Ideas section. Wired also assigns a smaller number of freelance stories for business, science, gear, and service sections each year. Articles range from 2,000 words to 10,000, but are usually about 5,000 words. Public Source is a news organization serving Pittsburgh and the surrounding region. They accept firstperson essays, resource guides, and investigative stories. The Texas Observer

This is a bimonthly magazine covering Texas through investigative journalism. The nonprofit Texas Democracy Foundation publishes The Texas Observer since 1954. They often cover issues that are ignored by other media. The magazine accepts short news stories (500 to 1,000 words), political commentaries and opinions (500 to 1,000 words), the book report (800 to 1,200 words), features (1,500 to 4,00 words), from profiles to criminal justice and environment, culture features (2,000 to 3,500 words), essays (1,000 to 1,500 words), postcards, and poems.
