Richard’s dad came to visit for the weekend from Texas and we all had a grand time! Max cried and cried when he left and we were so sad for him. It was pretty chilly all weekend with false threats of snow being flung by our whacky weatherman (he really is a pretty whacky fellow, quite bizarre, but we like him). Grandpa kept saying he was cold, even sitting in the living room with the heater turned up (and the rest of us sweating). He wasn’t here long enough to get acclimated to our weather. We, on the other hand, don’t really think it’s terribly, unbearably cold until it gets below zero here.

Okay, I need to confess something to all of you. I have a problem with… delegation, the act of entrusting another to MY work. That’s right. MY work. I like to maintain complete control of our business at all times. From A to Z (accounting to Zach), I am convinced that if I am not controlling everything simultaneously then things will definitely and completely fall apart. I recognized this problem long ago, and I know the stress my little control problem causes is probably slowly killing me. But, I was always afraid to turn over my tasks to another person. And, it seemed the time it would take to train someone to do it would just take up even more time that I did not have! Over the summer, our business boomed and it got to the point where I had to finally say, “No more!” My breaking point turned out to be a blessing.

I sold an article to a company that, according to their listing in Writer’s Market pays $800 to $1,200 for articles and columns. They are publishing my article and have not asked me to sign any contract nor have they discussed money. The magazine went to print last week and will be hitting the streets within a week or so. If I do not receive a check from them after it hits the street, I plan to have my attorney write a letter to them. In your experience, is that the best course of action?

It all started with a few prize wins – and a dream. I’d been enjoying the hobby of entering sweepstakes for over 15 years, while working as a computer instructor at our local technical college. Over the years my sweepstakes hobby grew and I began to accumulate a long list of sweepstakes wins (lists and pictures of my wins are on my web site at https://www.unleashedminds.com).

So you’ve finished your first novel (your memoir or a nonfiction or children’s book) and you’re seeking publication. You’re ready to leave the solitude of your writing den and make yourself known in the publishing community. It shouldn’t take long to snag a publisher. You’ve certainly worked hard on your book. Dear Ms. Hoy,
I have been receiving your newsletter for a short time.I am getting a little confused about the process of getting a book published. I have two very silly children’s books that have been read to two second grade classes and they seemed to really enjoy them. I want them out there. If not for any other reason than to make my dream a reality.
May I please bother you for your time and expertise where publishing two little books are concerned? I want to be a genuine author and I know that I will succeed, once pointed in the right direction.
