When Chicks Leave the Nest (sniff)

You’ll be happy to know that I’m not going to talk about the weather this week! 😉

Big news around the house these days is Ali (age 18) applied to two colleges and was accepted by both! One is nearby and very reasonable. The other is far away and very, very expensive. She’s enrolling in a specialized program and these types of schools are pricey. The reason I’m not getting more specific is because so many weirdos threaten us through our advocacy work for writers (WritersWeekly Whispers and Warnings) and some have even threatened our children.

Anyway, the rule in our house is, if you want to attend college out-of-state, get a scholarship. If you don’t, we’re only paying in-state tuition. Of course, if they want to get a student loan and pay the difference later, they can. Zach opted for in-state tuition, thank goodness. Now, it’s Ali’s turn. When Zach was ready to go to college, I knew he was ready. He was big and tough and I knew nobody could push him around.

Even if Frank (age 16 and 6′, 2″) left home today, I know he’d be okay. He’s cautious, quick-witted and, let’s face it, not many people are going to try to grab a kid who’s that tall.

However, Ali is a girl (our only daughter) and we are very protective of her. She’s tall but thin and any big, burly man could grab her and carry her away quite quickly. Also, she’s so nice and trusting of people. Heck, she’d give directions to a car thief…with a smile! Anyway, we’d love for her to live at home and go to school here – at least for a couple of years. The good/bad news is, she’s very talented, and is in the National Honor Society, and the big, expensive school is offering her lots of scholarship money now. If she gets enough, she’s certainly going to fly the coop in just a few months (sniff!). I sure hope that big school won’t mind us parking our RV there a few times a year. Heh…

Before she leaves, I’m going to make her take a self-defense course with me!

I have a Masonism for you this week.

When asked what he wants for breakfast these days, Mason (age 22 months) now yells, “Yucky Charms!”
