When Editors Assume Your Article is a “Donation”

A legit, well-respected publisher just accepted an article that I wrote and will be running it later this year. How long should I give them before asking about payment?

Thanks

They should have already sent you a contract.

If they haven’t, or haven’t even discussed payment, they may be assuming you sent in a “donation.” I hear about this happening ALL the time. Unscrupulous editors publish an article and then act surprised when the writer complains about non-payment. Their usual response is, “Oh, you wanted to be paid?” It’s a scam.

You should immediately email the editor and say you haven’t yet received a contract…in case she already emailed it. That’s all the hint he/she needs to let them know you do expect payment.
