What Free Product Should I Use For Book Promotion?

Hi Angela,

I’ve been reading your book, 90 DAYS OF PROMOTING YOUR BOOK ONLINE: Your Book’s Daily Marketing Plan.

It is very handy to have all the info. in one place.

I especially like the idea of an ezine (Days 4-7 in the book), and think I could write one about my ideas on writing fiction. I need to find something to offer free to attract new subscribers and I have an idea I’d like to run past you.

I have an unpublished non-fiction manuscript. Even though I now write novels, does it make sense to offer chapters of my non-fiction book as the free item to attract people to subscribe to the Ezine?

Thanks,
L.

I don’t recommend giving away something that is unrelated to the books you’ll be promoting. Have you considered creating a very short, free ebook that, perhaps, contains diary entries from one of your main characters, or something else creative along those lines? You could offer that as an instant download for new subscribers.

Per the advice in the book (page 24):

One way to entice readers to subscribe is to offer something free. I offer a free ebook to new subscribers at WritersWeekly.com: How to Be a Freelance Writer. This has been very effective over the years. If you’re a fiction author, you can offer a long article as a free ebook or perhaps something readers don’t get in your book (maybe copies of letters written by the main characters, or pages from the main character’s diary?). Get creative. You can think of something your readers might be interested in getting as a bonus for subscribing.

One thing is certain: if you don’t offer a free bonus to potential new subscribers, you’re going to have a very hard time building a good subscriber list. People don’t like to give out their email address unless they have a very good reason to do so. A free product, even if it’s electronic, is a great temptation.
