Should I Give Away Copies of My Book to Stores? NO!

Do you suggest walking into Barnes and Noble and giving them five copies of my book for free to put on their shelves?
– M.

No, I don’t recommend giving away free copies of your book to bookstores. The store may end up just throwing them away if they don’t sell (rather than returning them to you) or they could smile and accept your books and toss them anyway without putting them on a shelf at all. Offering free books to a retailer will also make you look (please don’t take this the wrong way) like an amateur. Professional authors who give away books to stores look desperate and that’s not good for your image.
