Q – I’m having a bit of an issue with a manuscript I am working on, and wonder if you might be able to help me.
I have found a few pictures on the Internet that I would like to use in my book. I have seen them on several different sites. However, I can’t seem to locate how or where to buy the rights to use them and I haven’t been able to find them (or anything similar) on the sites that allow you to purchase rights.
One website has given me permission to use them but I am not at all comfortable with this because I cannot be sure that THEY have the rights to be using them!
I really don’t know what to do.

A – It could take months (or an eternity) to find the original artist or photographer. I recommend only viewing photos and other artwork on reputable sites like istockphoto.com, and buying the rights to use those.
Many sites that flippantly give out permission to use photos they have featured have often stolen those photos themselves. Others mistakenly believe everything on the Internet is in the public domain and, thus, free for the taking. Good for you for being cautious about that and for being concerned about the rights of others! 🙂
