What in the World Makes a Boat Smell Like THAT?!

What in the World Makes a Boat Smell Like THAT?!

I’m desperately appealing to all you mariners out there (or anyone mechanically inclined) for your expertise in this matter. There is a boat on our dock that has a HORRIBLE odor. To be very  specific, it smells like vomit. Whenever we walk by, I have to literally hold my breath. No matter which way the wind is blowing, the odor will knock you down. It’s a large motor yacht. I have suspected that perhaps there is something mechanical that emits an odor that mimics puke but I can’t figure it out.

Do any of you know what can cause that odor? And, why in the world hasn’t the owner noticed? Everyone else on the dock has!

In other news, we had two big family dinners over the past two weeks. We have three family birthdays that occur within a month of each other. Max turned 18, Frank turned 27, and Zach turned 33. All our babies are growing up!! I just have to share two pictures I took of our 3-month-old granddaughter, Mackenzie. In the second photo, she’s obviously sucking in her jowls. I know…because I frequently do that with my stomach. 😉

Angela, i’ve spent a lot of time in marinas but have never experienced that. Whatever it is it can’t be good. Did you bring to dockmaster’s attn?

Not yet. I was hoping someone would have some ideas about the source before I call the marina office. Ug.

First of all, Mackenzie is absolutely yummy. Such a sweet face. As for the smell, ick. I hope it can be resolved. Let us know.

Bilge! If they are not cleaning any of the spaces where water can accumulate, it just sits there and eventually begins to stink. Not pleasant to be moored next to, that’s for sure. Anyway, wishing you fair winds and perfect seas.

Maybe it really is puke. And the owner of the boat is really an alcoholic who does not smell it or it is located where they cant clean it.

It also might be mold rot. If water got into the boat from the recent storms and it’s closed up in the Florida heat.
There was a boat next to mine in a yard that had a horrible stink and it was a lot like what you describe.

Eeeew!! Thanks, James. The boat has been her for about a year so it would be a long-term problem for the owner.

Ang that is gas. That is dangerous. Phone someone who sells and repairs boats before you light a match and blow yourself and the boat up. There is a leak.

It’s not gas. We would see the rainbow tint in the water. Everyone at the marina is always looking out for that. And, we don’t have natural gas here. Almost all of us use propane but it doesn’t smell like puke. 😉

I was just reading about something similar. Apparently, a “fishy” odor could mean an electrical issue. Sulphurous odors are more common and can suggest an number or problems like gas leaks, plumbing or air conditioning issues. Vomit odor is new to me. Although, having worked for a plumbing contractor, I can attest that water (and other) filters can produce a really strong funk if not cleaned or replaced frequently enough.
    Smell well soon!

Hmmmm!!!! A plumbing issue makes sense! Oh, geez. Maybe he’s flushing his waste overboard, which is very illegal here.
