    Angela,
I can assure you that your son’s costume will probably never top some that I have seen or for that matter have made for myself. i have several that, counting construction and labor costs (if I was paid for my labor) would be in the thousands of dollars. For instance, My complete historically exact French and Indian War uniform, including weapons (a real firing 3.5 inch period correct field howitzer, a brown bess musket, and artillery officer sword, pistol and requisite gun powder) would cost in the neighborhood of $10,000 in today’s dollars. But sinceI did much of the labor myself, it cost probably a third of that. This would be considered cheap by many in the reenactor community.
Very few reenactors ever get paid for their passion and even those who do, usually as movie extras, rarely make up their costs of travel and gun powder costs (yes, most movie directors require these extras provide their own gun powder at the current price of $25 per pound). A cannon crew at a reenactment can easily use over 10 pounds of powder a day! We historical military reenactors, however, do it for the love of history, and so that the world will never forget the sacrifices of those men and women made for their countries.
