Write a book to promote a book. How’s that for irony? By Douglas Arias

It is a well known and widely accepted fact that ebooks – FREE ebooks – are one of the best weapons in a viral marketing campaign arsenal.

Viral marketing is a marketing technique, similar to the spread of an epidemic, that reaches others through word of mouth to increase brand consciousness. Think about how a virus spreads from one person to another. One person gets sick and just by sneezing they can give the virus to many more people. Those people get sick and share their germs with everyone they know and come into contact with. Next thing you know, it’s an epidemic. That is the very concept of viral marketing.

You make your ebook viral by including a notice on the first or second page that reads something like the following…

**You are free to distribute this ebook provided that the content is left unchanged.**

This notice gives your readers the right to pass the book along. If your ebook contains material that people will want to share with their friends and family, they will pass it along to others, who will pass it along to more people, and so on.

Why Ebooks?

1. Ebooks are cheap to produce and don’t take long to set up.

2. Ebooks are capable of reaching a large audience. The only limiting factor is the enthusiasm of the participants. Therefore, it is absolutely vital that your ebook contain something that people will want to share.

3. Ebooks are digital and easy to deliver. With digital products there are no costs or headaches when it comes to deliverability.

4. Ebooks are effective in building your reputation. It is an implied recommendation when your readers pass it on to others.

Ebook Content

Now let’s look at using an ebook to start your viral marketing campaign. First you create an ebook, a really good one that people will want to share with others. Be sure to include links to your website where appropriate.

While deciding what the content of your ebook will be, don’t lose sight of the following goals!

A. Sell copies of your book (the real one – not the free one)

and

B. Self promotion. Create a name for yourself.

Your ebook should be a representation of what readers can expect from all of your work. So, just because you’re giving the ebook away for free doesn’t mean you can slack on quality. Make a good impression by providing quality content.

For non-fiction authors, try offering an ebook of articles you have written. Fiction authors can include sample chapters, or an excerpt, in their free ebook, which is a great way to tease readers into buying your book. Or, how about teaming up with other authors who share the same audience as you? Each author could contribute a story and each author would have an incentive to promote the free book. Use your imagination.
