Do Not Be Afraid to Expand Your Freelance Writing Business By Victoria Heckstall

Back in 2011 when I started freelancing, I would have never imagined that I would be at the level that I am at now. While I still am not reaching all of my freelance writing goals, I must say that over these past three years I am nowhere near where I started.

About a year in, clients started asking me about if I had a writing team; I would always reply, “No.” I would let them know I could handle all of their bulk work myself. While this was going good for awhile, about six months in, I was overworked, underpaid, and overly stressed. I always feared starting a writing team would just give me even more work to do since I would have to edit each piece before sending it over to the clients. On the other hand, I knew it was time for me to do something about this so I reached out to some writing friends to see if they would be interested in joining my newly created writing team. I would occasionally assign work when bulk assignments came in. To my surprise, these few friends were up for it.

I took the leap, and have a team of about ten or so writers who consistently complete assignments for me each week, with each client’s approval of course. This allows me to work on the topics that I love to write about, and contract out to another writer who likes the topics I am not so fond of. So, I still provide my clients with high-quality work.

The moral of my success story is, if your freelance business really starts to pick up, do not delay in building a writing team. It allows you to earn more, and be less stressed. You get to write on the topics that you love while still not losing your steady clients.
