Know Thy Market

I made my first sale before I realized my dream to be a freelance writer. I was working full-time for a marketing research company at the time and was a regular subscriber to a magazine geared to entrepreneurs and home-based businesses.
After subscribing for a year, I realized that the magazine hadn’t addressed the necessity of pre-market research. To validate my hunch for a potential article, I went to the library and reviewed all the magazine’s back issues from the past two years.
Lacking confidence in my ability to write an entire article, I penned the article beforehand. My query to the editor was brief but it did include the most pertinent information including an outline of the article, why the information was important to the magazine’s target readership and why I was qualified to write it.
