Good Old Boat Magazine, 7340 Niagara Lane N, Maple Grove, MN 55311-2655. P(701)952-9433. Email: Karen-at-goodoldboat.com. Website: http://www.goodoldboat.com. Karen Larson, Founding Editor. "Good Old Boat magazine focuses on maintaining, upgrading, and loving fiberglass cruising sailboats built in the 1950s, '60s, '70s, '80s, and '90s, as well as those built in the new century. Readers see themselves as a part of a community of sailors who share similar maintenance and replacement concerns not generally addressed in the other sailing publications. HINTS: "The writer/sailor must be familiar with our magazine and have something worth writing about that fits our content. I just received an annoying request from an individual whose only mission, apparently, is to be published and to receive payment for that. In his self-centered approach he never considered the needs of our readers and made it clear that he has no grasp of our publication or its purpose: 'My name is XYZ and I saw your website www.goodoldboat.com. I wanted to know, could I write about boats for your website? I am a talented writer. I hope to hear back from you. My e-mail is XYZ.' I wondered if he even realized that we publish a magazine. I replied: This might be useful to you: http://www.goodoldboat.com/writers_guidelines. Also familiarity with our magazine is very important. Once you understand the kind of articles we publish, you're in a better position to suggest article content that fits us. His response was so singularly off-base that I did not bother to reply (and that is not like me): 'Are you looking for around 1,500 words? And, how much could I make with the article?'"
