PAYING MARKETS

These are NOT recycled guidelines. WritersWeekly.com only features original market listings, received from and approved by the editors at each publication.

General Aviation News - Despite the fact that this company recently provided us with their detailed market listing info., they now claim they're not hiring freelancers because of the economy. We have removed the listing.

Glimmer Train Stories - This market listing has been removed because Glimmer Train charges some writers a reading fee. Ridiculous!!! - This market listing has been removed because Glimmer Train charges some writers a reading fee. Ridiculous!!!

Good Old Boat magazine, 7340 Niagara Lane N, Osseo, MN 55311. Email: karen-at-goodoldboat.com. Website: http://www.goodoldboat.com. Karen Larson, Founding Editor. "Good Old Boat magazine focuses on maintaining, upgrading, and owning cruising sailboats built anytime since the late 1950s. Readers see themselves as part of a community of sailors who share similar maintenance and replacement concerns that are not generally addressed in other sailing publications. Our readers do much of the writing about projects they have done on their boats and the joy they receive from sailing them." 90% freelance. Welcomes new writers. Circ. 30K. Bi-monthly. Pays 60 days in advance of publication. Publishes ms 12-18 months after acceptance. Buys First North American rights. No reprints. Responds in 2-6 weeks. Sample free on request. Subscription $39.95 per year in the U.S. and Canada; $49.95 overseas. Guidelines online at http://www.goodoldboat.com/writers_guidelines.
CURRENT NEEDS: "Short articles about simple projects they've done on their boats." Pays $50-$700 for 300-5000 words. "Email and letters, query or completed ms...all are fine. I prefer not to receive phone calls."
PHOTOS/ART: "We pay $100 for covers. Most other photos are included as part of articles we purchase. For covers, we still prefer slides shot with Fujichrome Provia 100, Kodachrome 64, or similar films. For everything else, we are happy with slides, prints, and electronic images. Please turn off the date stamp. It is difficult to remove that from your photograph. It may render a photograph useless, in fact. Never send a photo that has been printed on an inkjet printer. Send the electronic (digital) image instead. Electronic photo files must be high resolution -- at least 300 dpi -- to be usable for print reproduction. 4.2 to 6.2 megapixel cameras are up to the task with their high-resolution settings."
HINTS: "Short technical articles about projects done on your own sailboat are the best way to break in. Everyone wants to write Cruising Memories and Reflections articles. We receive way too many of those. Please keep in mind that you must be a sailor to write for us."

Good Old Days, 306 E. Parr Rd., Berne, IN 46711. Website: http://www.GoodOldDaysOnline.com. Ken and Janice Tate, Editors. "We are a nostalgia magazine, presenting memories of our readers for the 'Good Old Days' -- the period of time from the late 1930s to the early 1960s." 95% freelance. Welcomes new writers. Circ. 250K. Bimonthly. Pays on acceptance. Publishes ms 8-18 months after acceptance. Buys all rights, but will negotiate on first rights or one-time rights. Accepts reprints. Responds 2-3 months. Sample for SASE for magazine + $2 to the editorial office. Guidelines by email, or by mail with SASE.
CURRENT NEEDS: Queries or complete mss. Pays $0.03-0.06/word for 500-1500 words. Submit by email or by mail with SASE.
PHOTOS/ART: "Period photos only."
HINTS: "Don't use profanity or off-color stories. Use humor, but always in good taste. First person POV only. Nostalgia is inherently first person. Most of our articles are submitted by readers of the magazine. If you don't know anything about the magazine, get to know it before submitting. We get hundreds of submissions each month and can only use about 40. BIG supply; little demand. We try to be fair, but we must reject MSS on about a 15-1 basis."

GRIT, Ogden Publications, 1503 SW 42nd St., Topeka KS 66609-1265. P(785)274-4300. F(785)274-4305. Email: grit-at-grit.com. Website: http://www.Grit.com. Oscar "Hank" Will, Editor. 90% freelance. "Grit has been re-designed to focus on rural lifestyles, country living and small farming. We are looking for useful, practical information on livestock, gardening, farm equipment, home-and-yard improvement and related topics. We also offer some nostalgia articles in each issue - what it was like living on the farm in the Great Depression, how the family kept the peace during holidays, etc. What we expect from anyone who wants to write for us is that they know what the magazine is about." Circ. 130,000. Bi-monthly. Pays on publication. Byline given. Buys shared rights. Works at least 6 months in advance, so no last-minute submissions, please. No unsolicited manuscripts, assignments only. Send queries by mail or email. Sample copy for $4 and 9x12 SASE envelope (with at least $2 in postage). Subscription $19.95/year. "Writers guidelines are being reworked, but will eventually be available on website."
CURRENT NEEDS: "We no longer accept fiction or poetry submissions." Pay varies from $75 for a short, newsy article for Grit Gazette to $750 or more for long feature articles. We negotiate individually with writers rather than paying a per-word fee.

"Our publications are located in high-demographic and resort destinations, and target affluent travelers who seek the finest in culture, shopping, dining, recreation, and environment. Articles should be loaded with insider tips that capture potential visitor experiences." 85% freelance. Welcomes new writers. Circ. 55K-85K. Annual. Pays on publication.
