PAYING MARKETS

These are NOT recycled guidelines. WritersWeekly.com only features original market listings, received from and approved by the editors at each publication.

Oregon Quarterly, 5228 University of Oregon, Eugene, OR 97403-5228. Email: quarterly-at-uoregon.edu. Website: http://www.OregonQuarterly.com. Ross West, Managing Editor; Guy Maynard, Editor. "Oregon Quarterly is the successor to Old Oregon, the University of Oregon's alumni magazine founded in 1919. Although our 100,000 readers consist predominantly of UO alumni, our editorial approach has evolved in the past few years from a traditional alumni magazine to a regional magazine of ideas. To highlight this change, we now describe ourselves as 'The Northwest Perspective from the University of Oregon.'" 80%-100% freelance. Welcomes new writers. Circ. 100k. Quarterly. Pays on acceptance. Publishes ms approx. 1 month after acceptance. Buys first magazine rights; posts on the OQ website for approx. 3 months; permanent posting in the University of Oregon Library's Scholars Bank and OregonQuarterly.com archive. Accepts reprints. Usually responds quickly; sometimes slowly. Sample articles at website. Subscription $30; $40 outside the U.S. - Please make checks out to UO, putting OQ on the memo line. Guidelines online at http://oregonquarterly.com/html/guidelines.htm.
CURRENT NEEDS: "Unlike a traditional alumni magazine, the majority of our features are not about the UO as such. Instead, we generally address topics of state and regional interest (ideas, issues, and personalities) using the resources of UO faculty and alumni. The UO benefits from its involvement in these stories, not as their PRIMARY subject matter. Our goal is to reach a broad, well-educated regional audience, whether or not they have ties to the UO. As a magazine, we want to be recognized for the quality of our writing. Good magazine stories should have shape and depth. They are closer in conception and execution to a thoughtful essay than to a newspaper feature. They should involve the reader, awaken the imagination. They require some effort to write, but they are much more a pleasure to read. Most of our stories are contributed by freelancers. If the topic has a contemporary regional interest, and if UO involvement can be demonstrated (through faculty or alumni participation), we'd like to hear about it. We prefer a brief query letter (with SASE) that show the flavor of the proposed article and your writing style. Submit clips that demonstrate your ability. If you don't have a story idea but would like to be considered for assignments, submit clips with a cover letter explaining your interests and experience. We invite queries for features, short stories and UO alumni profiles. Our features generally run 1,200--3,000 words; short subjects run about 400-1,200 words, and profiles run about 350-1,000 words. Pay varies depending on subject matter and writer's experience, with department stories usually ranging from $100 to $450 and features significantly more. We pay on acceptance (after requested revisions), plus reasonable expenses (with receipts), provided they are cleared by us in advance. For contracted stories we do not accept, we pay a kill fee of 20 percent the contracted amount. We prefer a brief query letter (with SASE) that show the flavor of the proposed article and your writing style. Submit clips that demonstrate your ability."
PHOTOS/ART: "We ask writers to help us find strong photos to accompany stories. We assign photographers and illustrators." Pay varies.
HINTS: "As I am sure every other editor has said: read the magazine. In addition, we are an alumni publication from the University of Oregon--a strong UO connection is always appreciated. Tell us what you can do for us, not what we can do for you. A good way to get our attention is by entering our annual no-fee essay contest (winners receive good cash prizes and publication in the magazine)."

Outside Bozeman magazine, 313 W. Mendenhall, Bozeman, MT 59715. P(406)582-8068. Email: info-at-outsidebozeman.com. Website: http://www.outsidebozeman.com. Mike England, Editor. "Outdoor journal dedicated to lifestyle and recreation in southwest Montana." 75% freelance. Welcomes new writers. Circ. 20K. Quarterly. Pays 30-60 days after publication. PHOTOS/ART: Pays $25-$200 depending on published size.
HINTS: "Don't be overly formal; unless you're under 14, my name is Mike, not Mr. England. Don't list crappy publications as credentials. Be confident. Have a good idea. Get my attention. Above all else, know who we are and what we're all about. Don't send a query for something that our magazine doesn't cover, or is even on the periphery. Sell me some mainstream content first, then once we get to know each other I'll be open to more ancillary ideas."

"Submit query letter via mail or email. No phone queries."

Seattle Magazine, 1518 First Avenue South, Suite 500, Seattle, WA 98134. P(206)284-1750. F(206)284.2550. Email: Rachel-at-seattlemag.com. Website: http://www.seattlemag.com. Rachel Hart, Editor; Virginia M. Smyth, Managing Editor; Brangien Davies, Arts and Culture Editor (all arts, culture, trends and community events). 75% freelance. "The editorial mission of Seattle Magazine is to help people to live better in their city. Whether it's through a fun and informative service piece about the Best Doctors or an investigative political story that breaks down an issue for understanding, the piece must enrich the lives of our readers and give them useful, practical information about our city. The Seattle Magazine editorial style must be bright, lively and utilitarian wherever possible. Pieces should provide insight into the subject that goes beyond the obvious, beyond what the dailies and weeklies are saying, and provide insider information the reader couldn't find elsewhere. We cover food, arts, people, politics, news, business, shopping--all aspects of city living." Welcomes new writers "with great ideas and clips." Circ 45K-50K. 12 issues/yr. PHOTOS/ART: Requires slides or 2 1/4 film preferred. Pay varies.
HINTS: "Mistakes: many writers pitch us travel stories on Mexico or Australia--Not relevant to the local market. People can read about that and get better info from travel and leisure publications. We want regional travel stories."

HINTS: "Many of our contributing authors are currently homeschooling their children, but it's a mistake to assume that personal experience with homeschooling is a prerequisite for writing for The Old SchoolhouseĆ Magazine. Our readers strive for excellence in their home education; if you have expertise that you can share, we'd love to hear it! Each issue of TOS focuses on different themes. Themes for the 2009 issues are as follows: Summer: Charlotte Mason, How Things Work (Science), Special Needs/Adoption, Grandparents, and Home Ec Fall: Eclectic Style of Homeschooling, Chemistry/Experiments, Higher Education (High School and College), Entrepreneurs, Courtship, Dads, Lost Arts, and 12 Days of Christmas Winter: Classical Education, Marine Biology, Middle School Years, Math, Grammar/Writing/Spelling, Support Groups. We are looking for authors who have a passion about God, about homeschooling, about training children in wisdom, knowledge, and Godly character and who want to share their ideas with others who share similar passions. Make sure your content is well researched, thorough, and accurate. Write to teach and encourage, not to impress, the readers. Don't underestimate the value of your contribution. We'd love to hear your ideas for future articles!"
