CURRENT NEEDS: "Read the magazine. We look for stories regarding historic homes and decorating, antiques, crafts, and general history. Pay depends on the quality. First time writers can expect $500; experienced writers more. Our articles generally run about 2500 words. We accept unsolicited manuscripts. Include SASE for return. A vita is helpful but not required."
PHOTOS/ART: "Our magazine is very visual so art is important. We have high standards and have won awards for our photography and writing. Author should provide a source for illustrative materials. We hire professional photographers at their negotiated day rate. We rarely find authors' photos that meet our standards."
HINTS: "Read the magazine before making an inquiry. We serve a specialized, niche market. We have high standards for writing quality and accuracy. We often vet articles to experts. We aim for variety, so if you see us run a story about blacksmithing (for example) we likely will not run another blacksmithing story for years."
education.com, 2317 Broadway Street, Suite 240, Redwood City, CA 94063. Email: editorial-at-education.com. Website: http://www.education.com. Danielle Wood, Director of Editorial. 60% freelance. "Education.com is an easy-to-use, one-stop destination for parents of kids in preschool through grade 12. It blends cutting edge editorial, useful tools, community features, and thousands of reference articles from the most trusted universities, non-profits, and government agencies in the country. We cover topics across the parental spectrum...from how to make homemade finger-paint, to why autism is on the rise, guilt-free after school snacks, to navigating the parent-teacher conference. In an environment where the average parent spends 14 minutes or less per web session, it's our goal to empower parents and to offer them the best educational resources and lifestyle content available. We look for articles that tackle key educational issues, but also activity ideas those that make learning and family life more fun." Welcomes new writers, "especially if they are teachers or parents with kids in this age range." Circulation: 1 million unique visitors per month. Growing monthly. Publishes 10 original editorial articles each week, plus publishes about 50 new activities each month. Pays on publication. Usually publishes within 1 month of acceptance. Buys all rights. Considers reprints that have only previously been published in print. "While we'd love to respond to each query, we're a startup magazine, with a very small department. If you don't hear back from us in one month, please assume we were not able to use your article." Sample articles and activities appear at their website. Subscription free.
CURRENT NEEDS: "We are actively seeking material from teachers and other educators, in the form of fun, grade-specific activities that teach key skills in an unusual way (for example, having kids practice statistics by hosting a mini Olympics in your backyard, or using fractions while baking). Parents are extremely interested in what they can do at home to help their children succeed in school. We are actively seeking teachers in preschool- grade 12 for this endeavor. We pay a flat fee of $15 for each activity of about 400 words in length. Look closely at the activities on our site to get a sense of the structure and tone: http://www.education.com/activity/all-grades. Each starts with a paragraph introduction which introduces the skill set, why it's important for children in that particular grade to learn, and how this activity will help a child master the skill. Then, the activity lists materials under the "What You Need:" section, followed by "What You Do:" with a set of clear, linear directions. Each activity should target a specific grade and subject area. After looking closely at the examples on the site, please send a finished activity on spec. Of course we will pay for anything we end up using. Be sure to tell us a bit about yourself, especially if you have relevant parenting or teaching experience. And please, no attachments! If you are including writing samples or any other material, please paste them directly into your email. It saves us a lot of time. Write 'Writing Submission' in the subject line."
