ARCHEAOLOGY Magazine is one of two publications by the Archaeological Institute of America, a 125-year-old nonprofit organization. The magazine has been published continuously for 60 years now. We have a total audience of nearly 700,000 mostly in the US and Canada. Our readership is a combination of the general public, enthusiastic amateurs, and scholars in the field. Publishing bimonthly, we try to bring our readers all of the exciting aspects of archaeology: adventure, discovery, culture, history and travel. The magazine welcomes new writers. We publish bimonthly. We pay writers on acceptance of their work and on publication, depending on the piece. Response time is less than a week. We buy English and worldwide rights, including web. CURRENT NEEDS: Queries. "Your query should tell us the following: who you are, why you are qualified to cover the subject, how you will cover the subject, and why our readers would be interested in the subject. Clips and credentials are helpful." Pay for features starts at $1500.00 for 2500 words. Preliminary queries should be no more than one or two pages (500 words max.) in length and may be sent to the Editor-in-Chief at the address above or via email to: editorial-at-archaeology.org. If you would like a reply to your query mailed to you, please enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope. We do not accept telephone queries.
PHOTOS/ART: "While illustrations are not the responsibility of the author, they help to give us a sense of how the article could be illustrated. If possible, email them an example of 2 or 3 images at a time. We will request additional images if needed. Please do not mail us unsolicited transparencies or discs, as they will not be returned. If you do not have access to images, referrals to professional photographers with relevant material are appreciated. Pay is negotiable."
