Ben Thomas, Managing Editor. 85%-90% freelance. "The Willows is an atmospheric horror and dark fantasy magazine with an emphasis on the traditional "weird tale." We love work set in Victorian times, in the European countryside, in a twisted fairyland, in the underbelly of an enchanted city, or in the ruins of an undiscovered civilization. If your favorite authors are Barker, Blackwood, Dunsany, Gaiman, Moore, and Machen, this is the place for your work." Warmly welcomes new writers. Circ. not yet available. PHOTOS/ART: "JPG format, 300 dpi, maximum size 8 x 11 inches." Pays $10.
HINTS: "When submitting, take a moment to consider whether you'll be wasting both our time. Is your story about zombies, werewolves, and vampires, and thus more suited for traditional horror markets? Is it a straight mystery, with no supernatural or cosmic elements? Just make sure that this is a story that would belong in Weird Tales magazine back in the 1920s, or being told in a gentlemen's lounge in turn-of-the-century London. The best advice for new writers is to follow proper manuscript format, be polite in your queries, and show us that you have taken an interest in this particular genre."
