HINTS: "Writers often make the mistake of thinking they must supply Scottish content. Those who attempt to write to what they think is our agenda get it seriously wrong. We're interested in what they want to say - not what we want to say! Chapman is published in Scotland and Scotland is its primary concern, but our intellectual range is international, as is the spectrum of writers we publish."

CURRENT NEEDS: "We are a city magazine serving Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky. We're looking for service stories, serious journalism that examines current issues, and non-fiction that illuminates the human experience--all with a clear focus on our region. Obviously, finding these stories is easier if you live here. We do have staff writers, so freelancers have the most opportunity in the area of departments." Pays $300 for departments of 1200-1800 words, $500+ for features of 2500-4500. Submit query and clips by mail or email, "and please demonstrate familiarity with the magazine and the city."
PHOTOS/ART: "We have a staff photographer."
HINTS: "This is a city magazine: stories must have a local hook, and writers must be able to demonstrate that they understand the difference between news reporting and magazine feature writing."

Responds 7-14 days. Sample articles at website. Subscription free through local outlets. Guidelines by email.
CURRENT NEEDS: "Original stories about things that are relevant to Fairfield County Connecticut. We are also looking for people with experience doing rankings. We prefer local writers since the content is all local." Pays $0.50-$1.50/word for 150-500 words. Submit query by email.
PHOTOS/ART: "We ask writers to try to take photos or have sources provide artwork. We do have photographers available if necessary. Payment included in article fee when writers provide photos. However, regarding professional photographers, "we are always looking for people to help with covers and the calendar feature."
HINTS: "1. Writers often pitch very general stories. Everything must relate to Fairfield County or Connecticut in some way. 2. Many writers pitch the same old parenting stories over and over again. Our goal is to differentiate ourselves from the national publications and avoid repeating stories that people can read elsewhere. We need original ideas."

Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine, 475 Park Avenue South, 11th Floor, New York, NY 10016. Email: elleryqueen-at-dellmagazines.com. Website: http://www.themysteryplace.com/eqmm. Freelance percentage not provided. "EQMM has been in continuous publication since 1941. From the beginning, three general criteria have been employed in evaluating submissions: We look for strong writing, an original and exciting plot, and professional craftsmanship. We encourage writers whose work meets these general criteria to read an issue of EQMM before making a submission. EQMM's range in the mystery genre is extensive: Almost any story that involves crime or the threat of crime comes within our purview. However, like all magazines, EQMM has a distinctive tone and style and you can only get a sense of whether your work will suit us by reading an issue." Welcomes new writers. Circ not provided. Publishes 10 issues per year, including 2 double issues. Period between acceptance and publication varies. Buys first N.A. serial rights. Considers out of country reprints, but nothing from the Internet. Responds 3 months. Sample $5 or $2.95 and a 6 X 9 SASE by mail. Subscription $43.90 in the U.S. $53.90 elsewhere. Guidelines online at http://www.themysteryplace.com/eqmm/guidelines.
CURRENT NEEDS: "We publish every kind of mystery short story: the psychological suspense tale, the deductive puzzle, the private eye case-the gamut of crime and detection from the realistic (including the policeman's lot and stories of police procedure) to the more imaginative (including 'locked rooms' and 'impossible crimes'). We need hard-boiled stories as well as 'cozies,' but we are not interested in explicit sex or violence. We do not want true detective or crime stories. With the exception of a regular book review column and a mystery crossword, EQMM publishes only fiction. We are especially happy to review first stories by authors who have never before published fiction professionally. First-story submissions should be addressed to EQMM's Department of First Stories." Pays $0.05 - $0.08 per word, though sometimes higher for established authors. "2500-8000 words is the preferred range, but we occasionally use stories of up to 12,000 words and we feature one or two short novels (up to 20,000 words) each year, although these spaces are usually reserved for established writers. Shorter stories are also considered, including minute mysteries of as little as 250 words." Submit complete ms by mail with SASE only. "We do not accept email, fax or disk submissions."
PHOTOS/ART: "We do accept art and cartoon submissions, but not photography. Cartoons submitted by mail addressed to 'The Editors', all other artwork should be addressed to 'Associate Art Director, Dell Magazines'."
HINTS: "All manuscripts should be printed on one side of the paper and double-spaced. If you would like the manuscript returned in the event that we cannot use it, please enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope of suitable size. If you do not want the manuscript returned, please indicate this and enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope for a reply; if you live outside the U.S., please use International Postal Reply coupons for return postage."
