These are NOT recycled guidelines. WritersWeekly.com only features original market listings, received from and approved by the editors at each publication.

The Heart of New England online magazine, 16 Russell Street, Keene, NH 03431. P(603)357-8761. Email: editor-at-theheartofnewengland.com. Website: http://www.theheartofnewengland.com. Marcia Passos Duffy, Publisher & Editor. 75% freelance. "A weekly online magazine that celebrates the unique character of northern New England -- Maine, New Hampshire & Vermont. Features original articles on the region's travel, food, the arts, northern new England-made crafts/products, and gardening." Welcomes new writers. Circ. not provided (online only). Weekly. Pays on publication. Publishes ms 2-3 months after acceptance. Buys first electronic rights and article remains online for perpetuity. Accepts reprints. Responds within one month. Sample articles at website. Subscription free. Guidelines online at http://forums.writersweekly.com/viewtopic.php?p=45279 and http://www.theheartofnewengland.com/writersguidelines.html.
CURRENT NEEDS: "I am looking for travel writers for off-the-beaten path travel stories in Northern New England - about 500-800 (max) words on a place the writer has visited (and loved!) in Maine, New Hampshire or Vermont. Lots of detail, first person account is fine. Your ties to Northern New England (a resident, frequent vacationer, grandparents live in area, etc.) explained in story. We want a folksy, down-to-earth feel to the piece. Your love of the place you are writing about needs to shine through!" Pays $15 flat fee per story for 500-800 words. 'submit query first with story idea; include your name, address, email address, phone number and short bio" by email.
PHOTOS/ART: "Digital photos in JPG file much appreciated (or contact with a chamber of commerce or other organization that can provide a photo for online use if you do not have a photo)."
HINTS: "Please, stories about northern New England ONLY. New travel writers welcomed and encouraged! We try to rotate among the three states (ME, NH, VT) for balance; we also try to stick with seasonal stories (maple sugaring stories in Feb/March, mud season stories in April, etc.). I also want to stress that I ENCOURAGE reprints! Particularly from articles originally written for northern New England newspapers, etc. Writers need to make sure that they own the rights to the story (usually if they were on staff at a newspaper, the publication owns the rights)."

The Houston Insider, P.O. Box 88240, Houston, TX 77288. P(713)526-0544. Email: editor-at-thehoustoninsider.com. Website: http://www.thehoustoninsider.com. 95% freelance. Buys one-time rights. Accepts reprints. Responds 48 hours. Sample at website. Subscription $110. Guidelines by email.

PHOTOS/ART: Submit jpegs. No additional pay.

The Imperfect Parent, 210 Penny Ave. B107, East Dundee, IL 60118. Email: jessica-at-imperfectparent.com. Website: http://www.imperfectparent.com. Prescott Carlson, Site Editor. 70% freelance. "Popular parenting web site geared towards 'edgy' parents that enjoy laughing, reading, debating and above all else, celebrating their inner screw-up." Welcomes new writers. Circ. 180K page views/month. Publishes articles daily, weekly and monthly. Pays last day of month following publication. Period between acceptance and publication varies. Buys "first exclusive rights." Accepts reprints, but does not pay for them. Responds 3-4 weeks. Sample articles at website. Subscription free. Guidelines online at http://forums.writersweekly.com/viewtopic.php?p=45280 and http://www.imperfectparent.com/submit/index.php.
CURRENT NEEDS: "We are looking for articles and essays on the following topics: Parenting Methods, Political/Social issues, human interest stories and humor, all from a parent's perspective. Please try to stay away from cutesy pieces as we appreciate 'edgy' and controversial writing. We are also looking for features and book reviews which must be queried to our Editor at prescott-at-imperfectparent.com. Regular submissions must be made through our online form at http://www.imperfectparent.com/submit/submit.php." Payment: Book reviews $10; Anecdotal essays/humor $15; Original articles $25. "Payment for features varies depending on the writer's experience and relationship with The Imperfect Parent, but begins at $50 for an 800 word piece." Word counts: features 800-3000 words; essays 800-1000 words; humor 600-800 words; book reviews 400-800 words. 'these are not hard and fast numbers -- fortunately we do not have the restrictions of the print world, so we do not edit for length." Submit query by email to the editor, Prescott Carlson, at prescott-at-imperfectparent.com. "All other submissions must be done through our online form. There is no need to query anything other than a feature or book review. Regular submissions can be made via this form http://www.imperfectparent.com/submit/submit.php.
PHOTOS/ART: "Our submission form allows you to upload a GIF or JPEG image under 1 megabyte in size. Please do not use any copyrighted photos or images. If you do not have an illustrative image, feel free to upload an author photo." Does not offer compensation for photo that accompanies article/essay or author's photo.
HINTS: "We are shifting the focus of our site and are looking for more 'op-ed' type pieces -- articles on current events, etc., from a parent's perspective. The 'mom-oirs' bit has been overplayed, in my opinion - not that there isn't room for personal anecdotes and stories, but they need to have a point and not be pure navel-gazing."

InsidePOOL Magazine, PO Box 972, Kittanning, PA 16201. P(866) 961-7665. Email: editor-at-insidepoolmag.com. Website: http://www.insidepoolmag.com. Sally Timko, Editor. Usually responds in one day to emails. Back issues can be downloaded from their website. Subscription $19.99; $56.99 outside the U.S. Guidelines by email.
CURRENT NEEDS: "I am always looking for new talent. Writers must first and foremost have a love of pool. Strong photography skills are appreciated. Writing must not be stuffy but should reflect the creativity of the game itself." Pays $0.10-.25/word for 1,200-2,400 words. Submit query by email.
PHOTOS/ART: 300 dpi, digital is best. Pays $25 per picture printed.
HINTS: "Not doing enough research on the subject is probably the most common mistake I've encountered. As with any other topic, pool is exceptionally detailed and has its own quirks, and thorough knowledge of the game and its players are important."

Michigan Quarterly Review, 3574 Rackham Bldg., 915 E. Washington, Ann Arbor, MI 48109-1070. P(734)764-9265. Email: mqr-at-umich.edu. Website: http://www.umich.edu/~mqr. Laurence Goldstein, Editor. Large percentage of freelance contributions. "An interdisciplinary journal which publishes mainly essays and reviews, but also some fiction and poetry for an intellectual, widely read audience. We are happy to publish new writers, but do not give their manuscripts any more attention than those of established writers." Circ. not provided. Quarterly. Pays on publication. Publishes ms 6-12 months after acceptance. Buys 1st N.A. serial rights. No reprints. Responds 6 weeks. Sample $4. CURRENT NEEDS: "MQR is open to general articles directed at an intellectual -- but not necessarily academic -- audience. Essays ought to have a personal voice and engage a significant subject. Subscription $19.95; $29.95 outside of the U.S. Guidelines online at http://forums.writersweekly.com/viewtopic.php?p=44414 and http://oklahomatoday.com/site/editorial/editorialGuidelines.aspx.
CURRENT NEEDS: 'small stories." Pays $0.25/word for 100-3000 words. "Query letters and/or complete manuscripts may be sent electronically, or through U.S. postal mail. Please include a bio and copies of your clippings. If you would like your manuscript returned, please include a SASE."
PHOTOS/ART: "High resolution digital images of Oklahoma. Right now, we're looking for Route 66 images." Pays $50-$200 for stock photos; $50-$1500 for photo assignments. Photographer guidelines online at http://oklahomatoday.com/site/editorial/editorialGuidelines.aspx.
HINTS: 'read our magazine. Read Oklahoma newspapers and any other Oklahoma publication you can get your hands on. Keeping up with what goes on in our state is the best way to write stories that we can use. Include a biography of yourself and clips of previous work, so we can see what experience you have. Realize that the editors receive many manuscripts and that yours will be reviewed as soon as time allows. Don't necessarily expect your first piece in the magazine to be a feature; start small and suggest items for departments such as Across the Range. Even Letters to the Editor are good ways to 'get some ink.' Read the writing and reporting guidelines and familiarize yourself with the magazine before you submit a piece."
