PAYING MARKETS
These are NOT recycled guidelines. WritersWeekly.com only features original market listings, received from and approved by the editors at each publication.
Orato.com - Despite the detailed payment info. provided to WritersWeekly by Orato, it appears they now not only don't pay writers, but also take all rights. They also removed their writer's guidelines from their website. We have contact Orato about this, but are removing their listing pending their response.
Organic Producer & Consumer, UniMinds Media LLC, 32647 U.S. Hwy. 14, Lone Rock, WI 53556. Website: http://www.organicproducermag.com. Dion Puzon, Editor - dionp -at-uniminds.com. 100% freelance. "We are a publication for organic producers and consumers. Producers can be small operations that grow their own food but have enough to also sell at a farmers' market--or large commercial growers." Welcomes new writers. Circ. not provided. Bimonthly. Pays on publication. Period between acceptance and publication varies. Buys first world print rights; non-exclusive electronic rights. See guidelines for reprint information. Sample online at http://www.organicproducermag.com/orgpro_ezines.cfm. Subscription $9.60. Guidelines http://forums.writersweekly.com/viewtopic.php?p=45050 and http://www.organicproducermag.com/writers_guide.cfm.
CURRENT NEEDS: "We are looking for articles that provide info that will make producer operations more efficient and productive, about producers who have been successful, unique ways of marketing and doing business, the science behind organics, etc., as well as articles that will inform, entertain and educate consumers. We are open to ideas. Passion for the organic lifestyle is important, but since our writers include farmers, academics and other specialists, we favor writing that goes beyond interest. Pays $0.10/word. Word counts vary by department, average 1000 words for articles. "Pitch ideas via e-mail with brief resume that includes only what and where you have been published, particularly regarding relevant writing, links to online writing, and staff positions that are writing related. No attachments. We may ask for clips later."
PHOTOS/ART: "See guidelines."
HINTS: "Writers should read back issues and focus on ideas that are relevant. Keep in mind that some may have been covered, and others may be in the works, which is why we are looking for unique ideas."
The Poetry Market Ezine, Email: thepoetrymarket-at-yahoo.com. Website: http://www.thepoetrymarket.com. Ms. L.B. Sedlacek, Publisher. Publishes one review per issue. "Welcomes new writer. Circ. 1500 for the newsletter. Monthly. Pays on acceptance. Publishes ms 1-12 months after acceptance. Buys one-time electronic rights. Accepts reprints, "as long as the author holds the rights. TPME does not accept reviews written about an author's book sent to us by the author of the book unless they also have the author who actually wrote the review contact us as well with permission to publish the review. TPME does not accept reviews of an author's book written by the author themselves either." Responds 1-2 months. Sample online at http://groups.yahoo.com/poetrymarket, or subscribe by sending an email to poetrymarket-subscribe-at-yahoogroups.com. Subscription free. Guidelines online at http://webpages.charter.net/poppoets/aboutpm.htm.

Pays $5 per original unpublished poetry review or a $5 gift certificate to Barnes & Noble (subject to availability) -- author's choice." Does not pay for reprints. "If an author submits a reprint we will offer them a free ad in an issue in exchange for use of their reprint. TPME prefers and gives highest consideration to original unpublished reviews." Reviews average 500-800 words or 1 to 1/2 pages. "A little shorter or longer is okay, too." Submit query or complete ms by email only with "Poetry Review Submission" in subject line. "If 'Poetry Review Submission' is not in subject line, email will not be read." Include cover letter and brief bio. Also include statement that your review is original and unpublished if it is. If it has been previously published, include all markets it has been printed in (including ezines, websites)."

HINTS: Most common mistake is when writers "submit poems or poetry. TPME only publishes poetry reviews."
Pockets, 1908 Grand AV, P.O. Box 340004, Nashville, TN 37203-0004. P(615)340-7333. Email: pockets-at-upperroom.org. Website: http://www.pockets.org. (Ms) Lynn W. Gilliam, Editor. 80% freelance. "Each issue of Pockets reflects a specific theme and features material that children can use in a variety of ways. The contents include stories from scripture, fiction, poetry, prayers, puzzles, and activities with colorful illustrations and graphics. Submissions do not need to be overtly religious but should reflect daily living, lifestyles, and problem-solving based on living as faithful disciples. They should help children know that the Christian life is not always a neatly wrapped moral package but is open to the continuing revelation of God's will in their lives. Pockets uses seasonal material, both secular and liturgical. The magazine is written primarily by adults. We welcome submissions from children, particularly for the two Pockets Club pages. Pockets is inter-denominational. Our readers include children of many cultures and ethnic backgrounds. These differences should be reflected in the lifestyles, living environments (suburban, urban, rural, reservation), families (extended families, single-parent families), and peoples' names. Stories should show appreciation of cultural differences." Welcomes new writers. "We are certainly open to new writers. Time and workloads do not allow us to 'work' with writers. We suggest that all writers read, read, study, read, study, study, and study several issues of Pockets. Read the themes that relate to those issues." Circ. 95K. 11 issues/year. Pays on acceptance. Publishes ms approx. 10 months after acceptance. Buys newspaper, periodical, and electronic rights. Accepts reprints if they've been published only once before. Responds 6 weeks. Sample $1.50 plus 9x12 SASE with 4 first-class stamps. Subscription $19.95; $25.95 outside of the U.S. Guidelines online at http://forums.writersweekly.com/viewtopic.php?p=44408 and http://www.upperroom.org/pockets/writer_guidelines.asp; upcoming themes online at http://www.upperroom.org/pockets/upcoming_themes.asp.
CURRENT NEEDS: "We continue to need articles about children involved in environmental, community, and peace/justice issues. Such articles are entitled, 'Peacemakers at Work' or 'Someone You'd Like to Know' on the table of contents of each issue. We have very few submissions for this feature. We seldom have a selection of 'Wendell' stories for any issue. These are stories targeted for younger readers, 5-7 year olds. No more than 600 words. They must reflect the theme of the issue." Pays $0.14/word for stories and articles; $2/line, up to 24 lines, minimum of $25 for poetry; $25 and up for games and activities. Non-fiction runs 400-1000 words; Fiction 600-1400 words; Fiction for younger children, 5-7 year olds, no more than 600 words; and Poetry is 24 lines maximum. Contributions should be typed, double-spaced, on 8 1/2"x 11" paper, accompanied by a SASE for return. We do not accept queries, manuscripts by FAX or e-mail. Writers who wish to save postage and are concerned about paper conservation may send a SASP for notification of unaccepted manuscripts. We will recycle the paper the submission is printed on. Please list the name of the submission(s) on the card."
PHOTOS/ART: "For non-fiction submit 4-6 photos. We prefer pictures of children engaged in the activity. Send pictures that show their faces, not their backs. We will accept a school picture. Digital pictures must be 300 dpi." Pays $25/published photo. "Submit name and address of photographer along with photographs."
HINTS: A common mistake is when "writers submit material that is not appropriate for Pockets. Writers are wasting their time, energy, and postage. Know what kind of material interests a publisher before submitting material. Please do not query. Read the guidelines and the themes. Study issues of Pockets, and submit your material. We respond to submitted material within 6 weeks. Again, we suggest that all writers read, read, study, read, study, study, and study several issues of Pockets before submitting material. Read the themes that relate to those issues."

Freelance photographers should send slides or digitals. Freelance photographers sending digitals should follow the above size requirements, label all files by species and photographer's last name. Photos of the different types of animals should be burned onto separate CDs (geckos on one CD, toads on another) and include a page of thumbnails. All photos need to be labeled with the species name and the photographer's name." Pays $50 partial page inside color; $75 full page inside color; $150 center spread; $200 cover shot."
HINTS: "Queries should give some indication of the writer's background with herps."
Scientific American, 415 Madison Ave., New York, NY 10017. F(212)755-1976. Email: editors-at-sciam.com. Website: http://www.sciam.com. Ricki Rusting, Managing Editor; Phil Yam, News Editor. 80% freelance. "SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN is the world's premier magazine of scientific discovery and technological innovation for the general public. Readers turn to it for a deep understanding of how science and technology can influence human affairs and illuminate the natural world. Its readers are not primarily scientists; to the extent that they have technical backgrounds, they read SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN for information about areas outside their expertise. In every issue, leading scientists, inventors and engineers from diverse fields describe their ideas and achievements in depth. Our aim as editors is to ensure that these descriptions are clear, accurate, authoritative, and accessible to an audience of non-specialists. The graphics should be rich in content and visual style. Through the expert accounts and assorted journalistic features, we hope to share the intellectual adventure, fun and beauty of science." Occasionally works with new writers. Circ. 588K. Monthly. Pays on acceptance. Period between acceptance and publication varies. Buys first worldwide rights, all languages; non-exclusive secondary rights. No reprints. Responds 1 month. Sample articles at website. Subscription $34.97; $49 Canada; $55 other. Guidelines by email.
CURRENT NEEDS: "Articles that meet our editorial mission." Pays $1.50/word base fee. Article lengths vary. "Submit query with specifics on angle and unique offering. (Scientific American's inclination would be to use expert scientist authors for features, so journalists must have unique expertise or an angle that puts them in a better position to tell the story.) Bio and clip samples are helpful."
PHOTOS/ART: "Must suggest companion visuals; may need to work with editors or artists to help in creation of informational graphics." Pay varies.
HINTS: "Most common mistakes come from not reading the magazine. (For instance, proposing an angle that wouldn't be appropriate or a story that we have recently run.) Our advice is to read at least six issues before proposing."
