Pen Names
printable version
Do you think Pen Names are necessary and is it an easy process to get one? I am asking this because I knew that there was an alternate name you could use, like the stage names, but never knew the term to search for. Any thoughts on this subject would be helpful.
Thanks in advance,
G.
If you're going to continue signing contracts using your real name, and have your publisher or others write checks to your real name, you can very simply just put your penname on your book and ask your publisher to keep your real name confidential.
If, however, you need checks written to your penname, you'll need to get a DBA (Doing Business As) or other business certificate from your local municipality. Here in Maine, it's at the courthouse, but the location and licensing requirements vary depending on where you live.
